I love Celtic knots. I'm fascinated by there not being a beginning or end and they can get quite complicated. These look like ribbons to me. When I thought of the Celts I usually would think of the U.K., but did you know they originated in southern Austria/ northern Italy and spread west to the U.K.? You will find Celtic knots on architecture throughout the regions mentioned. The Celts even had a settlement at Mont Saint-Michel prior to the Archbishop of course building his church to God.
Mont Saint-Michel took my breath away when we arrived at a distance and I was in awe the entire time we had the blessing of visiting it. It's an entire village built on a rock that becomes an island when the tide comes in. According to a legend, the archangel Michael appeared in 708 to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches, and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet.
