Día de los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico and the U.S. on November 1st and 2nd. The history of the holiday comes from the indigenous people of central and southern Mexico. They believe that the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased children (angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them. The sugar skulls are made from sugar and like with our Halloween and Easter - loved by children. There are contests on how beautiful they can be made.
In that spirit I've created my Sugar Skull pendant for Karen McGovern's Love my Art Jewelry design challenge. You're going to want to hop on over to their blog for all the fantastic creations by participating artists. Her labradorite skull on is fabulous!
